چکیده

We present the R-band luminosity function for a sample of 18678 galaxies, with average redshift z = 0:1, from the Las Campanas Redshift Survey (LCRS). The luminosity function may be t by a Schechter function with Over the same absolute magnitude range, the mean galaxy density is 0:029 0:002 h 3 Mpc ?3 for a volume extending to cz = 60000 km s ?1. We compare our luminosity function to that from other redshift surveys; in particular our luminosity function normalization is consistent with that of the Stromlo-APM survey, and is therefore a factor of two below the normalization implied by the b J 20 bright galaxy counts. Our normalization thus indicates that much more evolution is needed to match the faint galaxy count data, compared to minimal evolution models which normalize at b J 20. Also, we show that our faint-end slope = ?0:7, though \shallower" than typical previous values = ?1, results primarily from tting the detailed shape of the LCRS luminosity function, rather than from any absence of intrinsically faint galaxies from our survey. Finally, we nd that the faint end of the luminosity function is dominated by galaxies with emission lines. Using OII] 3727 equivalent width W = 5 A as the dividing line, we nd signiicant diierences in the luminosity functions of emission and non-emission galaxies, particularly in their values; emission galaxies have Schechter parameters M = ?20:03 0:03 + 5 log h and = ?0:9 0:1, while non-emission galaxies are described by M = ?20:22 0:02 + 5 log h and = ?0:3 0:1. The average OII] 3727 equivalent widths do not change signii-cantly with redshift, consistent with a star formation rate which stays constant over the depths sampled by the LCRS. This result holds for galaxies of diierent luminosities, and over the respective redshift ranges that these galaxies may be observed, in particular up to about z = 0:2 for galaxies brighter than M .

Density-Dependent Luminosity Functions for Galaxies in the Las Campanas Redshift Survey

Galaxies in the Las Campanas Redshift Survey are classified according to their spectra, and the resulting spectral types are analyzed to determine if local environment affects their properties. We find that the luminosity function of early-type objects varies as a function of local density. Our results suggest that early-type galaxies (presumably ellipticals and S0’s) are, on average, fainter w...

The Luminosity Function of Galaxies in the Las Campanas Redshift Survey

We present the R-band luminosity function for a sample of 18678 galaxies, with average redshift z = 0.1, from the Las Campanas Redshift Survey (LCRS). The luminosity function may be fit by a Schechter function with M = −20.29± 0.02 + 5 log h, α = −0.70± 0.05, and φ = 0.019± 0.001 h Mpc, for absolute magnitudes −23.0 ≤ M − 5 log h ≤ −17.5 and h = H0/(100 km s Mpc). Over the same absolute magnitu...

ASTRONOMY AND ASTROPHYSICS 1.4 GHz luminosity function of galaxies in the Las Campanas redshift survey and its evolution

The sample of 1157 radio-identified galaxies from the Las Campanas Redshift Survey (LCRS) (Machalski & Condon 1999) is used to derive the 1.4 GHz luminosity functions of both star-forming (starburst) galaxies with the mean redshift 〈z〉 ≈ 0.07, and AGN-type ones with 〈z〉 ≈ 0.18. These functions are used as a direct measure of their evolution inferred from the evolutionary models of the entire po...

Evaluation of New MOND Interpolating Function with Rotation Curves of Galaxies

The rotation curves of a sample of 46 low- and high-surface brightness galaxies are considered in the context of Milgrom's modi_ed dynamics (MOND) to test a new interpolating function proposed by Zhao et al. (2010) [1] and compare with the results of simple interpolating function. The predicted rotation curves are calculated from the total baryonic matter based on the B-band surface photometry,...

Spectral Classification and Luminosity Function of Galaxies in the Las Campanas Redshift Survey

We construct a spectral classification scheme for the galaxies of the Las Campanas Redshift Survey (LCRS) based on a principal component analysis of the measured galaxy spectra. We interpret the physical significance of our six spectral types and conclude that they are sensitive to morphological type and the amount of active star formation. In this first analysis of the LCRS to include spectral...
